I was going to apply there but I don't have the grades or test scores to get in it's very hard to get in and it's a great school located next to the beach in sunny southern Cal so if you decide to go there you'll have a great time

Good school. Very, very nice campus. It's located on the cliffs over looking La Jolla--one of the nicest and wealthiest communities in all of San Diego. It is NOT on the beach. Great bio-med, one of the best oceanography universities in the country and very strong engineering programs. These are represented by the corner stone UCSD med cntr, Salk Inst, Scripps Inst of Oceanography and Jacobs sch of engineering. People: students are competitive. UCSD tends not to be a big party school. Community: very upscale towards the west (beach) and young and yuppie toward the east (UTC--univ town cntr).

I got into there a week or so ago, and i dont think i want to go there because it sounds really boring. i would rather go to davis or ucsb, even though its not as highly ranked. my cousin goes there and says theres not much of a social life, which i have heard from a lot of ppl. i visited the campus, and its not that nice. but i dunno, maybe if its strong in your major...?

Would San Diego State University be better for me?

Would San Diego State University be better for me?
So i'm not going to do any expensive schools but i want to be in southern california for school. I'm interested in dentistry and though San Diego state doesn't have a "pre-denta" program, there is still biology and i'm going to transfer to med school after anyways so would sdsu be a exceptional school?

UCSD is a competitive school. But it seems like you are in the house with your grades and your activities.

2
It's becoming increasingly hard to get into UCSD. After Berkeley and UCLA, SD got more applications than any other UC. Your grades are pretty good, especially considering your difficult course load. But your extra-curriculars could use some work. Try to take on some leadership roles in the clubs you belong to. . . or at the very least, be an active member rather than someone who just shows up for meetings so you can put it on your transcript. And why wait till next year to start that club? Volunteering would also look good, but don't do these things just for your college application. . . do them because you want to be an active member of the world and explore all that is out there to explore. Your SAT scores will also play a large role in your admissions decision. Good luck!

What colleges in San Diego have very good theatre programs?

What colleges in San Diego have very good theatre programs?
I currently attend the Art Institute Of California San Diego for Animation (am about halfway through) and have unfortunately realized only now that this school is beyond deplorable. I have also realized that what I love even more than art and animation is acting, specfically, voice acting. Now, I have a strong background in animation and fine art at this point, but it could also use some honing. Basically, my question is this: what schools in the San Diego area offer very good theatre programs/majors as well as a good Fine Arts program (for me to possibly minor in)?

First of all theatre programs do not teach acting well. You really should be choosing a professional school like LA Film School for animation and acting. Art and academics is a poor mix.

What are the best areas in San Diego as far as schools and family friendliness?

What are the best areas in San Diego as far as schools and family friendliness?
We're moving to San Diego from Nashville next summer and I want to get a head start on finding a good area with great schools and a family friendly environment. We're middle class in TN, so i'm not sure what that equates to in California (poor? LOL), but our main goal is to have a great school system....

This is probably a more subjective question, as different people have different ideas about what is good and family-friendly. Generally speaking, the best schools and safe and 'family-friendly' neighborhoods will be found in the north end of the city -- Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Tierrsanta, Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights. Not coincidentally, these are also some of the most expensive neighborhoods, in terms of real estate values -- but you get what you pay for.

2
I like La Mesa, it's got great schools and the housing market isn't extremely expensive like some neighborhoods. Good luck!

3
You should look at Poway, which is going to be the most affordable area among the best school districts. It's more conservative than Del Mar/Carmel Valley or Solana Beach, which are the other top school districts. Carlsbad comes next.

4
I relocated from Michigan and asked the same question on Yahoo Answer. I live in Rancho Penasquitos so I have a bias. I had the same desire for good schools. I have a much much smaller house but I didn't want to spend my life's saving on a great house with sub-par schools. Check out GreatSchools.net See how your school ranks now (or the schools in the area you live in) and compare it to other schools. Lesson 1- San Diego is very big place. When people talk about Scripps or Rancho Penasquitos they are talking about areas of the city itself that kinda have their own identity. Lesson 2- There are a lot of rich people out here. So when someone tells you "these are the best schools" check the housing prices in the area. I would sign up with Zip Reality or another site. Check out each area then type in the zip to see if you can afford to live there. A person with 2 Million to spend has a different idea of a good school then a person with 500,000. People have been steering you to some great middle class areas that are know for great schools. My husband works in La Jolla when I first looked at La Jolla prices I cried. Literally cried. Then my Mom said "you don't live in La Jolla honey" oh. Lesson 3 -With gas at $4.65 find out if you can where people in your household are going to work and of course see if you can live nearby. I personally checked out the Poway Unified School district. I looked in surrounded areas. To us it came down to price, schools, and what our idea of a house is. Is a condo a house? Do we need grass? Also our home in one income but we had my husband ask around at work where people lived. Sometimes it was areas where we would have to be a two income family. Sometimes people who relocated told him where they were and what they didn't like about it. a huge help. Like I knew I was alright with living farther from the ocean and my husband having a shorter commute. Lesson 4- People in CA rent. I found that really strange. In Michigan those people who rent are the ones who can't afford houses. (for the most part) Here I think people rent for lots of reasons including the housing market. So you may want to check that out. I think a rental agent cost a couple hundred dollars. But you can do it on your own too. Rental homes in awesome areas not at all what I pictured. We bought and our house price dropped a lot. But I couldn't find a rental to save my life when we looked. They say now is a great time to buy but I heard that too. How long do you plan on being here? Lesson 5- You are going to love it here. I miss my family but it really is a very open friendly city. It was a bit of a culture shock. CA is a little different. But it is a very cool laid back family friendly place. Good Luck

Is University of California San Diego really that boring? Are there no parties?

Is University of California San Diego really that boring? Are there no parties?
I was just accepted to University of California San Diego to the Sixth College for CSE: Computer Science which is kind of a gift from god considering my grades. I know UCSD is a very hard school to get into and the Jacobs school of engineering is no joke and ranks the top ten in the country for engineering. So I am very fortunate for getting in, and I know its a very good school. I would consider myself a smart kid, I have my head on straight. However, I do party a lot as in I drink like every weekend. I feel very fortunate that I got into UCSD and I would feel like I passed up a good opportunity if I didn't go, however, I need that college life. Will I be that bored if I go to UCSD? Are there some parties, just not that many parties? Is it really a dry campus? Would you recommend that I pass up UCSD if it is that boring of a school to go to University of Washington, Cal Poly, or UC SB?

I've heard that each individual college at UCSD has it's own lively lifestyle, as long as you go there ready to mingle with people. The college system there has really allowed many people to gather social lives that they probably would not have had at universities without the same system. Sorry to burst your bubble, though, but first and foremost, college is about the education, and no matter where you go, you will make friends that you will keep forever. **note:** You'll probably get a better feel for it if you visit some of these campuses during your spring break: I know that Cal Poly Pomona has a nice rec area for students, but I haven't ben to SB or UW so I dk about those two... and congrats on making it into SD! I got in there yesterday as a Biological Engineering Major!

3
Many of my closest friends went to SD and they didn't like the social aspect of it at all. I would goto SB if I were you. It has a great reputation in computer science/engineering. and it has an atmosphere much more in tune to what you want.

4
Depends on what you figure your priorities are going to be. You said "college life" which I aptly read "want to drink". UCSD is a wonderful academic institution, but it's kind of isolated from the rest of the greater San Diego area. There are definitely parties to be found, you just need to know where to look and who to ask. If you feel you "need that college life", you may want to consider how long you'll "need" it. I was a partier my first few years, until I realized that I wasn't going to get anywhere doing it that way, especially after I graduated. After I turned 21, I pretty much stopped going to parties anyway, so the social life (or lack thereof) really didn't affect me. Also, UCSD is about two miles from the beaches (Sixth is in the NW corner of campus). As far as I'm concerned, as long as you have a beach, if you get bored it's your own damn fault. If you really value the "college life" that much, then you might consider Poly-SLO. If you don't think it will matter much after a few years, stick with UCSD.

5
Every college has a social life, so don't sweat it. I know people who are attending Seminary, and you would think this would be dreadfully boring, but they have parties and dances and go to clubs like everyone else. San Diego is a good spot to be in. It's close to Mexico if you are inclined to South of the Border thrills, and it's close to the mountains, Tahoe, Las Vegas, the dune-buggy sand hills of Arizona. And the beaches are great. So what's not to like? Congratulations on getting in, by the way. I'm sure you'll find a lot of fun along with a quality education there.

The Art Institute of California: San Diego...help!?
I am currently a junior in high school, and I already know that I am going to major in art at the art institute of california. I have only taken art for one year, and a foreign language for one year. Does anyone know if the college i want to go to requires two years of a foreign language? because i would rather focus on getting as many art classes as i can and get out of spanish. please help me, i have tried searching there website, and i havent actually found any info about that.

No, it does not require two years of language or any art. they don't require anything unless if you want to major in game art they require a portfolio i know that as a fact, i was very stuck on going to AI San Diego, and didn't listen to people who told me other wise until the very last minute, but i suggest you think a little about going to a two year and transferring.. California does has a great transfer system (automatic guarantee if you keep decent/good grades) and you make an art portfolio as you take art classes. (and it would look better on a resume than a propriety *for profit* school. do the best you can do for you, you still have time; your only in high school, and if money is not a problem aim bigger for a private school that is respected ( Otis college of design? ) i bet it may even cost less! if you have not already, collegeboard.com is a great website, they have a search engine that looks up schools for you, it's really fun and incredibly helpful. sorry if i burst your bubble, but i was going to be $130,000 in debt if i went! (that is cheap living included ) cheers to you if you don't have to take out loans, but alas, it will be your decision and good luck with what ever you do. i know the charm that school has A lot can happen form here and now! ( a recession happened to me!)

University of California at San Diego Question!?

University of California at San Diego Question!?
I want so badly to get into UCSD[University of California in San Diego], specifically Scripps Institution of Oceanography. I want to be a marine biologist. I'm a freshman now, and I know that freshman grades don't really count at UCSD, only sophomore and junior grades. I go to a private school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and get good grades. I had only 2 B's last semester, but they were in Pre AP classes. I plan on taking all the AP classes I can the rest of my high school year. Here's my question: What classes would you recommend I take in order to get into UCSD and what grades? Also, do you think I still have a pretty good chance even though I don't live in California? I'm planning on taking two science classes a year

Different Universities have different requirement. the one that you like is science, i suggest, get a science course and study hard. Get As. Don't get B. It's disqualifying. Hope this will help you. PS: if you are non californian resident, expensive. I tried at UC Berkley, $70,000 for foreigners and non californian resident

San Diego Teachers? Or anyone teaching in Southern California?
I'm curious to get some information about teaching in the San Diego area, or southern California in general. Are jobs hard to come by? What about as art or English teachers at a high school level, or teaching at an elementary level? How long were you in school for to obtain certification for teaching? In general, what you are thoughts and opinions on teaching?

Don't know anything about that school, but I would think that if you want to work in anything in any kind of medical field you would definitely want to attend an accredited program.
